As you follow it on the social media, I am preparing my first triathlon. On April, 16th I participated in the 85 km running race at Iznik Ultra and took the 4st rank in my age category (I will share my race story this week, but you will understand why I couldn’t write it yet after reading this article). As soon as I came back to Istanbul from Iznik, I didn’t have much time to rest since I had to start to train immediately for the Antalya triathlon on May, 14th.
Until today I was preparing by myself my running program training. Since triathlon is a completely new sport for me I decided to get support from Andrea Gabba, the head trainer of the Turkish Triathlon national team. I have to tell immediately that following a training program written by someone else and moreover someone with such an experience is really motivating. When I was only running, it was sometimes happening that I postponed my training sessions but last week, I didn’t miss any of them.
I won’t write very long, but I want to share with you how my first week of triathlon training did go.
1) Time consuming
Yes, when I look at my past week I have the impression that I almost had time to do nothing else than training. Actually I had some free time, I gave my sports lessons, I went to my meetings but I couldn’t find time to write for example, because I felt tired and needed to sleep. I came back from Iznik Ultra extra tired and ill and on top of that I followed my triathlon training program and when I was at home, I slept one or two hours in the afternoon. When outside, I also didn’t miss a chance to sleep: I took some 20 min naps on the vapur or in the metrobus : )
Last week I trained in total during 13 hours 30 minutes
– I gave 2 times 45 minutes spinning lessons
– 200 km bike
– 18 km running
– 3250 swimming
Regarding to my program, actually I had to run a little bit more but on Wednesday instead of running, I decided to go riding for example. On this day, neither my mind nor my legs wanted to run. It is not easy to forget an 89 km run (yes at Iznik Ultra 85 km race, I actually ran 89 km).
2) An exciting training
Every day you are making something new. This is what I liked the most about my first week of triathlon training. No chance to get bored. Comparing to a running training, training for a triathlon is much more colorful.
3) Need of planification and discipline
In general, I had 2 training sessions a day so I needed to be well organized. It is not possible anymore to tell “Oh I will train when I find time”. Without making plan, it is impossible to follow a triathlon training program.
4) Keeping your morale high
For me swimming is still the biggest challenge. On Friday night for example my training was 1x 800 m, 1x 600 m, 1x 400 m and 1x 200m freestyle swimming. I came back home with a bad morale. It was a tough training and I started to panic when thinking that I will have to swim 1500 meters in open sea during the race. But I didn’t have much time to get depressed, I slept and on the next day at 6.20 AM I was already riding my bike. Actually constantly passing from a sports discipline to another is good for the mental, you don’t have chance to think too much.
Today, it is Monday and a new weeks starts. Besides my training, this week I have some important points that I need to solve and I would be very happy if I can get some ideas and advices from you.
– I need to make more stretching
– I need to become a bit lighter without losing strength, power and muscles
– I am planning to make some strength training (2 times 1 hour) with some plyometric exercises and exercises with resistance band. Any other ideas?
– I need to get some sports massage. Do you have any place to recommend me?
– Regarding the equipment, I need a wetsuit. As far as I understood, I will need to buy it from abroad. Who can be helpful? Actually I would be very happy to get some support and sponsorship from a brand.
– I want to swim in open water. What do you think about swimming in Caddebostan, Kartal or around the Princes Islands? Any other ideas?
Thank you for your precious support and advices. Stay healthy, have good training sessions but before everything don’t forget to have fun when training.
