Between this Thursday and Saturday evening (24-25.07.2015), I will be in the mountains of Bolu in the south of Black Sea region, and for the third time take part in the race DASK ADAM (“Nature Research, Outdoor Sports and Rescue Society” Mountain marathon). The DASK ADAM race is a two day race offering four different distances but the rules are the same for all categories: each team has to carry its own equipment and food supply and find the course with compass and map only.
The distances are the following: short course 30 km (altitude change 800-1800 m), middle course 50 km (2200-3200 m), long course 70 km (3200-4000 m) and Gökhan Türe Ultra Course 90 km (4200-5500 m). The distances are as the crow flies, so in reality participants will run 30% more distance.
The race will start very early on Friday morning, the first teams taking the road at 5 AM. The courses are planned using the outdoor country map scale 1:25.000. The map and the coordinates of the check points are given to every team at the start of each day and teams are reporting each on the map. It is forbidden to use any kind of GPS instruments are mobile phone. Furthermore, the teams must carry some obligatory equipment: tent, food, first aid kit, compass, sleeping bag, backpack, lamp, matches, whistle, knife, water bottle and PMR (Professional Mobile Radio)!
Since I participated in other adventure races in the past (Cookie Adventure race 2013 and Cookie Adventure race 2014), I had all the requested equipment apart from the PMR. Last year, a friend lent me one but I decided to buy one this year: when organizing activities in the forest, using a PMR is handier and safer than using a mobile phone that doesn’t even have any coverage in the remote forests.
I decided to go for one model from Midland. I chose this Italian brand because it has a long experience in the field of PMR and so a trustable brand. I hesitated between some models and finally chose the two-ways radio MIDLAND G7 Pro Mimetic. No need to say that my eyes got caught by the camouflage design, but its robustness is very important for me too. Furthermore its Vibrating call alert feature and the VOX sensitivity levels are nice product features ın rough conditions. In Turkey, Midland are sold by the company DNS İç ve Dış Ticaret. The participants to DASK can benefit from a 20% discount to buy a Midland radio, just tell when your order “I am participating in DASK and I heard about you from Cora”!
